Recently, I had the pleasure of restoring a small, well-loved desk that had clearly stood the test of time. Structurally, it was solid — a testament to good craftsmanship — but the top had begun to show its age, with splits and an uneven surface that made it difficult to work on.
After discussing options with the client, I suggested replacing the top with a full leather inlay. Not only would this provide a smooth and level writing surface, but it would also add a touch of elegance and durability. The client was excited by the idea, and together we chose a striking bright orange leather — a bold choice that would turn this humble desk into a real statement piece.
Once in the workshop, I began by making some basic repairs to the frame. I then installed a fine bead around the edge of the top surface — both to protect the leather and to give a neat, finished look. To ensure the leather would lie perfectly flat, I laid down a thin sheet of MDF as a base before bonding the leather in place.
The final touches included staining the edge bead to complement the overall tone, followed by a good wax polish to bring out the desk’s natural character.
The result? An unique and eye-catching piece that’s now ready for many more years of use — with a fresh look and a surface that's both practical and beautiful.
